12 Resolutions for the next 12 months

New years is almost everyone's favorite time of the year! Well followed by Yule tide cheer comes more hope for the future and a longer holiday with New Years. New Years is never completely done without a new years' resolution. While you do have a lot on your plate and want to spend more time with your family and friends, or do you want to squeeze in a few extra minutes of gym-time?

While we respect all those resolutions, we ask you to add just one more to conserve our beautiful nature. I promise you most of them are not time consuming and will fit right into your daily schedules. So, let's give it a whirl? Shall we?

1. Throw trash in the dustbin

While I believe that you do do that, here are two ways to make it more efficient. One is the simplest, do not litter when you step outside the house, just carry an extra bag and collect the trash in it and dispose it off when you reach back home. And the second option is segregating it into degradable and non- degradable waste.

2. Earn by helping the environment

The Non-degradable waste that you segregated you can sell it back to recycle factories and earn a significant amount of money every month. Isn't that cool!

Well, you can earn pretty significant amounts just from caring a little bit about the environment around you. (read this article)

3. Tend to a tree

For this one you don't even have to plant a tree for this. Look out for the tree. It's pretty simple actually. Water is daily and nourish it with care. Since this plant is not in your garden particularly, you might not even need to tend to its bug infestation and fertilizer needs, all you have to do is water it and remove the leaves that are rotting. Eventually it will be a healthy and green tree and add to not only the color of the scenery but also to the oxygen level of your locality.

4. Plant a tree

Whether or not you are a green thumb, that's okay. One can always pick up new traits right? Well, why not give it a try. Planting and tending to plants and trees is a really good therapy for stress. Well, if you are planning on giving it a serious thought, here is something that might help you. (Read)

5. Use Recycled Stationary

Are you a stationary fan? Cause if you are, this is the perfect new years' resolution for you! It's stylish, reduces waste and not expensive at all. While you buy stationary from companies like ITC and Navneet why not try something different this year?

There are many companies out there that have been making amazing school, office and craft supplies made out of recyclable material and recycled materials. If that fancies you, here are some top companies in India that work in this sector.

  1. GreenotechIndia- They are known for creating office supplies by using recycled papers and plastic.

  2. PEPPA - Formerly known by the name of Plantcil. They specialize in making plant-able seed products, such as plant-able pencils. Once your use for the product has been completed you can just put the remaining product into soil and soon a new sampling would take birth. Isn't that awesome?

  3. Ecoware- They are known for make eco friendly kitchen utensils. I know it doesn't sound fancy and in most cases breaks a lot of traditions, but hey traditions have to start somewhere why not make helping the nature a tradition?

6. Support an online petition to save the environment

This one is super simple and does not consume a lot of energy. There are a thousand petitions that are released online every year to support the cause of conservation. You might be wondering, whether signing them is even beneficial or just a waste of time. Well the truth is, sometimes it can be disregarded even with a high signing number but the resistance matters. It brings to public notice that there is something untoward happening and in a democracy state that is enough for officials to be forced to change their decisions. You might be aware of The Array Colony Prevention of Tree Cutting Petition, that was an online petition that forced the government officials to change their decision. There are many such examples.

However before you sign a petition, do read about it and the history of its cause. Yes, we should conserve nature but not like lunatics. We are all educated enough to understand the cycle of nature and also cause and effect. But at the same time we should also have the right to believe in what we sign for its logical reasoning. So don't blindly sign a petition, read up a little, measure its stakes and do what you believe is right. Not sentimentally but by logic.

7. Volunteer at an environment- related NGOs

This one might be a little more of a commitment than a resolution. But far more satisfying than anything else. There are a lot of local and national NGOs that need help.

2. Wildlife Trust of India

4. PETA

8. Feed a stray animal

This is something that can fit right into your schedule. You don't even have to do much. We all have stray animals in our locality, we have food that goes wasted in our kitchens everyday. So why not put it to a better use? Just keep in mind that spices cannot be digested by the stray animals and hence before you feed them, wash it thoroughly.

Everyday, they die out of starvation or mistreatment by us. Even feeding one can make a huge difference to their health significantly. One good deed a day is the moto we need to live by.

9. Take part in a local clean up drive

Clean up drives happen every Sunday where a group of dedicated people try and make a difference to the environment by cleaning up the trash thrown around by inconsiderable people. While on an outing we throw trash around, just behind the excuse that one man's trash would not matter amongst a hundred others. That's is not true, one man can make a difference. If you want to see a difference first you need to be that difference. Taking part in local clean up drives help people see that smallest of efforts can make a difference.

10. Support local companies that use recycled material

This is a lot similar to what we've been discussing so far. However the only change to it is, that don't buy products of any company that does not support recyclable or recycled products. It is a little harsh, but it would make the company more aware of the materials used and may even encourage them to use more eco- friendly alternatives.

11. Consume less

This doesn't mean that you stop consuming what you have been so far. It just simply means you make a conscious effort to reduce, reuse and recycle whatever you have. It has two upsides. a. There is a significant money saver and b. It majorly reduces the load on the environment because of the decreased carbon foot print.

Reusing the resources- There are always alternatives to everything. For example use jute bags while shopping. The bags can be reused, are stylish and amazingly strong.

Reducing the resources- Many of the items we use on a daily bases can be stocked up or ordered in bulk instead of buying items only when needed. In the second scenario a lot of packaging is used which can be prevented when buying in bulk. If you are worried about storage, you can buy air tight containers to store the items such as chips, snacks etc.

12. Talk to friends and family about conservation

This can also fit right into your schedule. Be more aware and increase awareness about environment and animals and how they need your help to conserve and protect them. You can additionally send this blog to your friends and family or share our other blogs to increase awareness. It might be hard to talk about subjects like these, but it doesnt have to be. It is not only normal but also important. It is about our future, our future generation and the planet we call home.
